What is the difference between the fastest and shortest route? - difference between fastest and shortest route

In my GPS gives me the opportunity to decide whether one of the fastest route or shortest route for each trip I plan. What is the difference? (TomTom Navigator)

As already mentioned here, is the fastest way measured by time, while the shortest distance is measured.

Please note that depending on the exact form of the measurements with the fastest way through the updating of routing information, time of day and the current state of the track. So it may be advantageous for the quickest, shortest, and their own current knowledge of the environment as a reference.
